Donations to the International Response Fund can be sent to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013 or made by phone at 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) or online at http://www.redcross.org. We are not accepting volunteers to travel to Haiti. If you would like to volunteer for the American Red Cross, please contact your local chapter. For inquiries about relatives living and who have citizenship in Haiti, please be patient and call repeatedly until the lines clear or contact other family members who live nearby. Telephone, Internet and other communication lines are often disrupted in times of disaster. People trying to locate U.S. citizens living or traveling in Haiti should contact the U.S. Department of State, Office of Overseas Citizens Services, at 1-888-407-4747 or 202-647-5225.

A push by celebrities, athletes and the first lady encouraging text-message donations for earthquake relief in Haiti has contributed to a fund-raising bonanza for the American Red Cross, which a little over a year ago turned to Congress for a bailout. As of late Sunday, Jan 17th, the organization had collected pledges of $103 million, about $22 million of which came through the text-messaging program. The National Football League’s promotion of text-message donations during its weekend playoff games produced stunning results, with money “coming in at the rate of $500,000 an hour,” said Roger Lowe, a Red Cross spokesman.

“I need a better word than ‘unprecedented’ or ‘amazing’ to describe what’s happened with the text-message program,” Mr. Lowe said.

The Red Cross is the biggest relief organization with a system in place to receive such donations, which are sent by cellphone to 90999 and billed at $10 each to the cellphone account. The total raised, a small portion of which will be shared with other members of the Red Cross federation, puts the organization well ahead of other relief groups in fund-raising for operations in Haiti.

The contributions come despite well-publicized controversies over the Red Cross’s performance and financial accountability after other major disasters.

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, for example, representatives from the British, German, Colombian, Dutch and other international Red Cross organizations criticized their American counterpart for inadequate planning, poor management of supplies and faulty record-keeping and logistics. And after the Sept. 11 attacks the organization struggled to deploy some $1 billion in donations.

While no one has suggested that the organization has mishandled its response to the earthquake in Haiti, Red Cross officials said they were fully aware that all eyes were on them. Mr. Lowe said transparency and accountability were among the organization’s major priorities for this disaster. He noted that Gail J. McGovern, the new Red Cross president, has placed an emphasis on those aspects of its operations.

In almost every major disaster, the American Red Cross collects the bulk of donations, in part because of its recognized brand name and its presence in communities throughout the country where small chapters are staffed by local volunteers.

“The Red Cross is simply the default group for donors when a disaster like this occurs,” said Richard Walden, chief executive and founder of Operation USA, a relief organization based in Los Angeles that also is involved in the emergency response to the Haitian earthquake. Mr. Walden has been critical of the Red Cross’s management of its money as well as its on-ground operations in the past.

“They Hoover up all the private funds,” he said, “but I can understand that. Because as a donor, you’re thinking if your house burns down or there’s an earthquake, you might need them, too.”

The Red Cross is one of a handful of nonprofit groups that hold a Congressional charter, and the president serves as its honorary chairman, in addition to appointing the chairman of its board. The Red Cross also has officially mandated responsibilities and roles to play during disasters under the National Response Framework.

“They are a quasi-governmental organization, and that’s a tremendous benefit when it comes to fund-raising for something like this,” said Robert Sharpe, a fund-raising consultant.

President Obama and Michelle Obama, who made her pitch for the organization on YouTube and in a television public service announcement, visited the Red Cross headquarters in Washington on Monday.

But perhaps the most valuable support the administration offered the Red Cross was in getting the organization’s “Text to Help” program off to a speedy start. The Red Cross had experimented with mobile fund-raising in the past with limited success, Mr. Lowe said, but the State Department stepped in with assistance this time.

It was the State Department that initiated the text-messaging program shortly after the earthquake hit, said Tony Aiello, chief executive of mGive.com, which processes the contributions for the program.

It normally takes a couple of weeks to get a text- message-based giving program up and running, he said, but after the State Department placed a call to James Eberhard, chairman of mGive’s parent company, the process was streamlined.

MGive also waived the fees it would normally charge the Red Cross for processing texted donations. Some mobile carriers are similarly waiving their fees and pledging to forward the money donated right away, rather than waiting until customers pay their bills.

“It really has been the quality of the call to action that made a difference,” Mr. Aiello said. “When you’re talking about the government in the form of the State Department and the White House working together with an organization like the Red Cross, they’re able to get so many media outlets and individuals to get behind the program.”

Mobile charitable donations have grown as the use of cellphones has expanded. Mobile donations for Hurricane Katrina, for instance, were $250,000, said Jim Manis, chief executive of the Mobile Giving Foundation, a nonprofit that works with wireless companies and charities to set standards for text-message donations.

While the growth is generally seen as a boon for charities, there have been some questions about whether it reduces individual donations because of the $10 set amount.

The Red Cross response in Haiti includes delivering basic supplies like tarps, blankets and hygiene kits to people gathering in makeshift camps, building latrines and training Creole-speaking volunteers to work as translators aboard a United States Navy ship where Haitians will be taken for medical care.

How To Read Your Past and Future Lives

by Manly P. Hall (*)

In astrology the sign ascending on the eastern angle of the heavens at the moment of birth is the general significator of the present incarnation.

The zodiacal sign upon the cusp of the 12th house may be termed the preceding sign to the ascendant, and the zodiacal sing upon the cusp of the 2nd house may be termed toe succeeding sing from the Ascendant.

The ascendant is the general significator of the present incarnation.

The 12th house is the is the signifacator of the life previous to the present one.

The sing upon the 2nd house is the next incarnation after the present one.

The rule is that the angular houses signify present life, succendant houses the next life to come, and candent houses the previous life and its karma.

Ordinarily the 12th house of the horoscope is termed the house of self-undoing, in that it reveals the fundamental weakness of character which undermines the probability of present success. The term “self-undoing” is identical in meaning with karma, or the accumulation of past actions which overshadows present conditions. This accumulation is carried forward from life to life until all weaknesses are overcome and final perfection is achieved.

It naturally flows that whatever zodiacal sign dominates the present life of the individual, the sign previous to it signifies the karma brought forward from the past. The positions of the ruler of that sign and planets in the 12th house reveal the circumstances of the previous existence, the probable place and time of the previous birth, and the genral circumstances for the existence.

The sign Aries ascending indicates Pisces to have dominated the previous existence. Aires, the first sign of the zodiac, is the beginning of a new cycle of experience. Aires people have come into this life form a previous existence of limitation, responsibly, and bondage. Their present life therefore a release and they move forward, dominated by strong ambition and enthusiasm.

If Taurus ascending, they have brought forward the impulse of the previous Arian existence. Most Taurians bring forward attitudes of Aires, and beneath their artistic surface, emotional fires bear witness to the militancy of their previous incarnation.

When Gemini ascends, we find beneath the intellectual attitude the karmic pressures of Taurus. The superficiality of the Gemini temperament is evident throughout this country, which is strongly mercurial. Yet, under the general intellectual surface of the national is a powerful and despotic economic force that is a distinct Taurian hangover.

When Cancer ascends, Gemini lurks in the background. Cancer people are subject to the distorted imaginations of a negative and uncontrolled Mercury. Its hard for Cancer people to be natural and relaxed, for behind them is a life lived under the influence of a negative Mercury agitation the intellect by complex of options and fears that are too often allowed to grow into facts.

When Leo is ascending, there is a generally a strength complex arising out of the weakness of the previous life. For this reason, Leo people are apt to be egotistic and power-loving, building a positive outward front to protect a very sensitive, emotional, imaginative, subjective nature held over from the Cancer influence.

When Virgo is ascending, there is a subconscious repentance in the soul. The previous life was under the forceful, domination influence of Leo. The Leo incarnation revealed the emptiness and vainness of authority, and the native is born into Virgo with a strong tendency to the simple life. Virgo is the sign of atonement, and the individual has the impulse to help a world which he probably tyrannized in the previous life. Deep inside themselves may Virgo people have rather definite Leo superiority complex and a tendency to boss.

When Libra ascends, the individual brings into life Virgo Karma. The people of Virgo have a tendency to lean and depend, and this weakness comes forward in Libra as a sense of internal insufficiency. The Libra native is of an artistic, somewhat irritable, delicate temperament. He has a strong vanity arising out of his Virgo repentance.

When Scorpio ascends, the strong emotional power of the previous life combines its force with the fiery nature of this sign. Libra is artistic and emotional with a tendency to melancholy. Scorpio intensifies these qualities, giving also depth and organization to the though. The self-gratification of Libra is the national foundation for the powerful ambitions of the Scorpio.

Sagittarius ascending produces a jovial temperament, but the Scorpio qualities of the previous life are also present, producing their love of the mysterious, religious, and philosophic aspirations, a strong emotional nature, a love of power and position, and danger of overindulgence. The schemes and plots of Scorpio are released as vast promotion projects by the Sagittarians.

It may first seem improbable that we should find much of the Sagittarius in Capricornian. With Capricorn rising however, we find great emphasis upon the ambitions and considerable measure of the Sagittarian concept of justice.

When Capricorn ascends, the individual generally feels that he is limited or inhibited. the large Jupiterian promotions of his previous life are curtailed by the Saturnine limitations of his present sphere of action, so he is dissatisfied and repressed.

As Capricorn is the most limited sign of the zodiac (a limitation, however, mostly self-imposed), it is natural that the next incarnation should be a revolt against limitation. The result is the Aquarian whose life if often dedicated to unconventionality.

With Aquarius Rising, there is a general revolt against precedent, convention, and conservativeness. Generous in large matters, Aquarians often retain a selfishness in small things essentially Capricornian.

Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac as it brings to the end the cycle of karma set in motion in Aries. People with this sign rising will usually have rather hectic lives, gathering up loose ends of unfinished business. Firm Aquarius, the preceding sing, come vacillation, inconsistency, and nervousness. From all the preceding signs come responsibilities and problems to be assimilated and transmitted into soul power. Its is the particular duty of the Piscean to put his life in order and prepare himself for a new beginning and a higher level of action. Pisces is the weakest of the signs because it represents the end of a cycle of the experience.

By reading the 12th house as the Ascendant, the genral pattern of the previous life can be determined in reasonable detail, and we can discover the subtle forces we have brought us to our present state and dominate our present life. Thought the understanding of this branch of astrology, we can appreciate the old philosophical belief that all we are today is the result of what we have been, and that we will be tomorrow must be the result of what we are today. We learn from the past, we labor in the present, and we build for the future.

He is perhaps most famous for his work The Secret Teachings of All Ages: An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic and Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy, which is widely regarded as his magnum opus, and which he published at the age of 25 (or 27, 1928)

He has been widely recognized as a leading scholar in the fields of religion, mythology, mysticism, and the occult.

Carl Jung, when writing Psychology and Alchemy, borrowed material from Hall’s private collection.

In 1934, Hall founded the Philosophical Research Society (PRS) in Los Angeles, California, dedicating it to an idealistic approach to the solution of human problems. The PRS claims to be non-sectarian and entirely free from educational, political, or ecclesiastical control, and the Society’s programs stress the need for the integration of philosophy, religion, and science into one system of instruction. The PRS Library, a public facility devoted to source materials in obscure fields, has many rare and scarce items now impossible to obtain elsewhere.

In 1973 (47 years after writing The Secret Teachings of All Ages), Hall was recognized as a 33º Mason (the highest honor conferred by the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite), at a ceremony held at PRS on December 8th, despite never being initiated into the physical craft.

In his over 70-year career, Hall delivered approximately 8,000 lectures in the United States and abroad, authored over 150 books and essays, and wrote countless magazine articles.

A Prayer to Lord Shiva

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

Introduction to Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

The great mantra dedicated to Shiva as Mrityunjaya is found in the Rig Veda. It is called the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra, the Great Death-Conquering mantra. It is a mantra that has many names and forms. It is called the Rudra mantra, referring to the furious aspect of Shiva; the Tryambakam mantra, alluding to Shiva’s three eyes; and its is sometimes known as the Mrita-Sanjivini mantra because it is a component of the “life-restoring” practice given to the primordial sage Shukra after he had completed an exhausting period of austerity. The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is hailed by the sages as the heart of the Veda.

OM. Tryambakam yajamahe
Sugandhim pushti-vardhanam
Urvarukamiva bandhanan
Mrityor mukshiya mamritat

Meaning:
Om. We worship The Three-Eyed Lord Shiva who is fragrant and who increasingly nourishes the devotees. Worshipping him may we be liberated from death for the sake of immortality just as the ripe cucumber easily separates itself from the binding stalk.

Explanation:
The mantra is a prayer to Lord Shiva who is addressed as Sankara and Trayambaka. Sankara is sana (blessings) and Kara (the Giver). Trayambaka is the three eyed one (where the third eye signifies the giver of knowledge, which destroys ignorance and releases us from the cycle of death and rebirth).

Best Time to Chant:
Chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra with sincerity, faith and devotion in Bramha Muhurata is very beneficial. But one can also do Maha Mrityunjaya japa anytime in a pure environment with great benefit and discover the happiness that’s already within.

Significance of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra:

Devotees strongly believe that proper recitation of the Maha Mrityunjaya rejuvenates, bestows health, wealth, long life, peace, prosperity and contentment. It is said that chanting of Shiva Mantra generates divine vibrations that ward off all the negative and evil forces and creates a powerful protective shield. Besides, it is said to protect the one who chants against accidents and misfortunes of every kind. Recitation of the mantra creates vibration that pulsates through every cell, every molecule of human body and tears away the veil of ignorance. Hindus believe that recitation of the mantra ignites a fire within that consumes all negativity and purifies entire system. It is also said to have a strong healing power and can cure diseases declared incurable even by the doctors. Many believe Maha Mrityunjay Mantra to be a mantra that can conquer death and connect human beings to their own inner divinity.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra:
The following Maha Mrityunjay Mantra has been taken from the Sukla Yajurveda Samhita III. 60. The Mantra is addressed to Lord Shiva and is a centuries old technique of connecting one to pure consciousness and bliss.

How to Avoid All Gossips & Foes

Bagalamukhi Mantra

To stop all gossips involving you and avoid all foes simply use the miraculous Bagalamukhi Mantra. This mantra is traditionally chanted to:

1)stop all internal foes–in the form of fears, doubts, worries, ego, etc.

And

2) paralyze external foes: those who wish to do you harm to you in some way, especially in the form of speech and written word: she stops the negative speech and harmful intentions of others towards you. Therefore this mantra is traditionally used to stop those filing a wrongful and undeserved lawsuit against you; malicious gossip; slander; libel; bad behaviors of rude and aggressive neighbors, etc.

Goddess Bagalamukhi is also considered the goddess of fascination and transfiguration, rapidly taking you across the illusion of separation into Unity.

This mantra should only be chanted with a pure heart, seeking the highest and most compassionate resolution, and purification of karma, for all concerned, and never as a weapon of ill will.

The “L” is added to the tantric bij mantra “Hrim” to create the vibration of “stoppage.” HLRIM!

Om HLRiM bagalämukhi sarvadustänäm väcam mukham padam stambhaya jihväm kilaya buddhim vinäsaya HLRIM om svähä!

New Max Heindel’s Rose Cross Released

“Rose Cross” is a Quarterly Rosicrucian Online Magazine, created and supported by students of the Western Wisdom Teachings , dedicated to promote Rosicrucian Teachings, Spiritual Astrology and related subjects. It is related to The Rosicrucian Fellowship but not formally affiliated with it. Writers of published articles are alone responsible for statements made. This edition has been designed by Alexandre David de Oliveira Passos, official webmaster of the Rio de Janeiro’s (Brazil) The Rosicrucian Fellowship Website (fraternidaderosacruz.org)

This Magazine does not promote, nor sanction mediumship in any form, nor association with familiar spirits as in divination, nor sorcery , nor hypnotism nor any practice of the black arts. We renounce the application of astrology as a tool of divination in concert with unseen entities, as a commercial practice, but recognize it as part of God’s design, the Wheel of Time. “The wheels of God grind slow, but they grind exceedingly fine.” .. see Psalm 19. While we would distinguish between white and black magic, we reserve the term “witchcraft” to denote the black, and various shades of grey. We distinguish between “occult” practices which are in compliance with God’s Law and those which are in opposition to it. This broader definition of the term “occult” recognizes that there are invisible realms and that all that pertains to those realms are occult, or obscured from ordinary sight.

This issue presents a lot of Rosicrucian illustrated articles and it’s Editorial was written by Dr. Elsa M. Glover, Ph.D., passed to Superior Cosmic Planes on June 26th, 2003CE.

“Portrait of Aleister Crowley assuming Achad” (Frater Velado 2003CE)

For those interested in Aleister Crowley heritage in artistic arena this NYT Sunday Book Review is highly recommended: “Led Zeppelin, Gods of Rock on the Celestial Staircase”. This is a review by Rick Moody, published on December 24th, 2009CE, about the book “When Giants Walked The Earth” (A Biography of Led Zeppelin) By Mick Wall, Illustrated. 504 pp. St. Martin’s Press. $27.99

Young rock enthusiasts of the 21st century, those of you who listen to your music on a little shiny thing with earphones and who read only on an LCD screen, come near and we your grandparents shall tell you of a long-ago time when men with Gibsons were the knights errant of the land, striding across stages shrouded in mist, soloing at great length! What’s that? You don’t really know what Led Zeppelin is or was? And you’ve never read that salacious earlier biography, Stephen Davis’s “Hammer of the Gods”? Well, do I have a story for you. Or at least this Mick Wall does, this fellow from England who has also written or co-written definitive biographies of Ozzy, Bono and Iron Maiden. The back story is like this: A hot session guitarist named Jimmy Page kills some time in a band called the Yardbirds (“Shapes of Things,” etc.) until he decides he can do better by assembling the New Yardbirds — except that he is unable to lure away the Who’s rhythm section, which he devoutly wishes to steal, or Steve Marriott of Small Faces, a singer of note. He settles instead for a couple of country yokels, Robert Plant and John Bonham, vocals and drums respectively, and another somewhat frustrated session dude, John Paul Jones, who plays the bass. Of these, Page is most happy about Bonham, who hits the drums as if he is trying to affect seismic activity in the British Isles. About the singer, who is very good looking, he’s not sure. Page doesn’t pay much attention to the bass player at all.

The band performs its first gig within weeks of its initial rehearsal and books time in the studio not long after. Mostly they borrow their material, in Wall’s account, which means they take other people’s songs and change them very little. If this were literature, young rock enthusiasts, these songs would amount to instances of plagiarism, but since this narrative takes place not long after the folk revival and some of these Zeppelin songs were trad, adopted from earlier folk and blues pieces, the band somehow, at least initially, escapes with changing a couple of lines and giving the song a new title — “Black Mountain Side” instead of “Black Water Side,” and so forth. Turns out that a lot of Led Zeppelin stuff was “borrowed” to one degree or another, including “Dazed and Confused,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “When the Levee Breaks” and even (yikes!) their biggest, most gargantuan hit, a track called “Stairway to Heaven” that most of us have now heard so many times we would rather die than hear it again. Some people, according to Mick Wall, believe the opening guitar lines of “Stairway” were filched from the band Spirit.

Notwithstanding their compositional deficits, Zeppelin has that elusive band chemistry, and so they make some more albums, which sell really shocking numbers of copies, tens of millions, and between albums they tour the United States a lot, and do really horrible, morally offensive things to young women who offer themselves up for delectation. We used to think, young rock enthusiasts, that this behavior was somehow marginally explicable, and that is the big difference between this book about Led Zeppelin and earlier books. For example: included herein is the famous story of the groupie and the shark, which has been dealt with elsewhere at some length. This bit of lore is now so upsetting and so repellent that it makes you never want to listen to the band again. Nor do the band’s demurrals on the groupie issue convince you otherwise. (Robert Plant: “The thing people forget when they tut-tut about this stuff is what a laugh we were having. People have a tendency to look back on the band as this dark force spreading its wings when we were just young guys, having a good time. The main thing I remember most about those days now is the laughter.”)

And then there is the Aleister Crowley part of the story. Back then, you see, people had their alternative spiritual systems. This inspired them to create, I suppose, and so this guy Page, he went in search and came up with a very recondite philosophical backwater. He got into this necromancer, Crowley. How did the Crowley program work exactly? Wall, in perhaps the very best and most cogently argued section of his account (which often manages elsewhere to feel both rushed and repetitious), does include a great deal on exactly what Crowley’s Ordo Templi Orientis stood for, among which was, “heterosexual magickal acts (adoration of the phallus as the microcosmic counterpart to the sun)” and “masturbatory and autosexual techniques (referred to as the Lesser Work of Sol).”

The weird symbols with which the band adorned its fourth album? Those were Crowley-influenced pictograms, including that sort-of word “ZoSo,” which, in the bedrooms of high school students, we believed was some kind of obscure album title. In fact, it appears to be a reference to Crowley’s 666, or that’s what Wall thinks, and it is Page’s very own icon. Even “Stairway to Heaven,” the aforementioned monster hit, the one that Dolly Parton later covered, was not free of its Crowley-esque imagery (ascending into light being a Luciferian conceit), though Robert Plant, the singer, wrote the lyrics, not Page.

Of course, there were intoxicants in profusion! Perhaps as a result of these, the effective period of Led Zeppelin was brief. In Wall’s view, it lasted only from 1968 until 1975. By then, the neglected bass player had already tried to resign once, and the drummer, who used to get so violently homesick on tour that he had to throw things out the window and pull guns on people, began compensating for his pain by drinking truly voluminous amounts. After 1975, the curse of Led Zeppelin (meted out specifically by Kenneth Anger, another Crowley disciple, after he was ejected from the Page residence) took effect, and Plant was in a horrible car accident, and then his son died, and then Page dwindled into a prolonged period of heroin addiction. Finally, John Bonham managed to abbreviate his unhappiness once and for all by consuming the equivalent of 40 shots of alcohol in one day, of which Page says: “The thing is, it wasn’t new to us to see Bonzo drink and pass out. I knew a lot of people who used to do that. Maybe in this day and age it might ring alarm bells. But in those days it was the norm within the sort of people that you knew.” After Bonham’s death, the remaining members disbanded. To read the complete review click here.

Magical Consciousness

by Ina Cüsters-van Bergen (*)

Magical consciousness is often seen as a way of thinking that creates illogical links between events happening in the outer world and the inner meaning of situations. Within healthcare settings magical consciousness is often seen as a confused form of thinking and one of the symptoms of psychiatric disease. An example of magical thinking is someone linking a passing red car with an expected future accident and an unhappy endings. Or in a milder form, the belief that a black cat passing your road is a sign of a chain of unfortunate events developing in the near future.

The most common scientific opinion of magical thinking is that is based on a disturbance in the neuro-technology of the brain, and that this kind of magical awareness is an abnormality, arising from a narrowed mode of consciousness.

Magical consciousness is connected to the ongoing stream of associations circulating in the subconscious mind, and forms a continuous undercurrent of awareness on which our daily decisions and actions are based. It is not common knowledge that this is a layer of consciousness that you can train and change. This is what we do in a magical training programme. This is the essence of magical exercises.
